Brenda passed away unexpectedly on March 3, 2020. Brenda worked as a child life specialist in the hematology oncology unit at Akron Children's Hospital for 28 years - her entire career. Brenda exemplified the best in her chosen field through her selfless dedication to those who required her care. Countless patients and families benefited from Brenda’s compassionate care and support. Brenda loved working with the teens in the Showers Family Center and always did everything possible to make sure they succeeded. This will be a lasting tribute to her memory.

The purpose of the Brenda K. Powell Memorial Scholarship is to provide one (or more, depending on funding) scholarships annually to a graduating high senior who is, or has been, a hematology or oncology patient at Akron Children’s Hospital and is seeking additional education (college or other vocational training). Scholarships will be awarded based upon a blinded review of prompted essays submitted by patients. The Director of the Showers Family Center will be the ultimate decider on the recipients of the scholarships but may choose to convene a committee to review the essays and provide feedback.
