Piano-a-thon 2018 Providing Music Therapy to Patients at Akron Children's Hospital
In early 2016, Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation approached us with the idea to establish a permanent endowment. The idea was to create an entity that would last long into the future. It also would be focused on the goals for why Piano-a-thon was first created, i.e. giving kids the opportunity to support the wonderful programs of Akron Children’s Hospital.
It is with great pride that we announce the formation of the John C. & Elaine Thompson Piano-a-thon Endowment for Music Therapy. Music therapy is an integral part of the Expressive Therapy Center that is part of the Palliative Care Program. The program is under the direction of Dr. Sarah Friebert, with Ellizabeth Germano as the Music Therapy Coordinator. Music is such a healing tool for all ages, even NICU babies, and they do a remarkable job. We hope to allow them to do even more. We could not have asked for a more appropriate and deserving recipient.
Piano-a-thon is the primary fund raising event for the endowment. This will be our 19th event, and it is so exciting to see how it has grown from its humble beginnings.
Again, thank you to all the students and teachers who have helped to make the Piano-a-thon the success it is today. Thank you to Steinway Piano Gallery for their tremendous support. And many thanks to the Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation for making the endowment idea a reality.
